Lithuanian artist based in Malaysia, Ernest Zacharevic, has filed a lawsuit against low-cost airline AirAsia and its parent company Capital A Berhad. He accuses them of using one of his most famous artworks on one of their aircraft without his permission. According to the lawsuit, the famous street painting 'Kids on Bicycle', created by Zacharevic in 2012, was 'replicated and displayed' as part of an exterior design on a company aircraft in late 2024. The artist confirmed that the use of the artwork was done 'without consent or a license', noting that the design was later removed after he publicly raised the issue on social media. The painting 'Kids on Bicycle' is one of the most prominent landmarks in George Town, where it depicts two laughing children on a real bicycle attached to a wall, making it a popular tourist spot where visitors constantly take photos. Zacharevic stated that he personally saw the plane at one of the airports, describing the situation as 'feeling a bit insulted', and emphasizing that his work is 'a standalone piece of art, not just a general cultural symbol'. Documents from the lawsuit reveal that the artist had held talks with the company in 2017 about the possibility of implementing art projects for their aircraft and offices, which (according to his claim) means the company was fully aware of the nature of his work and his professional terms. Despite subsequent talks between the parties, no settlement has been reached so far, while the artist has left the potential compensation amount to the court's discretion. The company has yet to make an official comment on the lawsuit.
